Care after surgery: helping your parent recover in Kuching

For families in Kuching whose parent is having an operation, most often a knee or hip replacement: what the first weeks need, how long recovery takes, how to prevent a fall at home, and whether home or a recovery stay fits.

What does a parent need in the first weeks after surgery?

In the first weeks after surgery, most parents need help to move safely, to wash and dress, and to keep up their exercises and medication.

  • Moving safely with crutches or a walking frame. Stairs are a particular hazard at first.
  • Washing and dressing, while bending is hard.
  • Pain relief and other medication, on time, as the hospital prescribed.
  • The exercises the physiotherapist sets, every day.
  • Wound care as the ward explains it, and who to call with a worry.

How long does recovery from a knee or hip replacement take?

Recovery from a knee or hip replacement takes several months, and most people use a walking aid for the first few weeks. Pick an operation to see the usual milestones.

Falls hurt older people most: the WHO says about 71% of deaths from falls in 2023 were among adults aged 60 and over.

Should your parent recover at home or on a recovery stay?

Recovery at home works when someone can help for the first weeks, day and night. If nobody can, a recovery stay covers those weeks.

What should you ask before your parent leaves hospital?

Before discharge after surgery, ask the ward for the papers, the exercise plan and the rules your parent must follow at home.

From the ward
  • The discharge summary and an up-to-date medication list.
  • The exercise plan, and when the physiotherapy sessions are.
  • Which movements to avoid, and for how long.
  • Who checks the wound, and when stitches or clips come out.
  • Which warning signs mean calling the hospital.
  • When the follow-up appointment is.
From a recovery stay or care home
  • Who helps at night, and how often they check.
  • Whether physio is available, and what it costs.
  • Who gives the medication, and how doses are recorded.
  • Whether staff can see your parent in hospital before the stay.

Common questions

How long does it take to recover from a knee replacement?

Several months or longer, the NHS says. Many people try walking without an aid at about six weeks. Most daily activities come back within 3 to 6 weeks, according to AAOS.

When can a parent drive after a hip replacement?

After at least six weeks, the NHS says. Check with the surgeon before your parent drives again.

What is post-operative care?

The care after an operation: help to move, wash and dress, medication, exercises and wound care, until your parent manages alone. Families give it at home, or use a recovery stay for the first weeks.

How do you prevent falls after a hip or knee replacement?

Take up loose rugs and wires, fit grab rails, light the way at night, and wear shoes that grip. A fall in the first weeks after surgery can damage the new joint, AAOS warns.

When does a recovery stay make sense after surgery?

When nobody can be home to help for the first weeks, day and night. A stay covers those weeks, and your parent goes home once the house and the family are ready.
