Search for a nursing home or an old folks home in Kuching and you get a list of places that do quite different things. Some are residences with care staff on site; others are retirement living with support attached.

The short answer

Three things decide it: how much help is needed on an ordinary day, whether someone needs to be there at night, and what the budget can carry.

If the answer is daily help and someone around at night, the eight to compare are Adam & Eve, Care Collective, Eden on the Park, Evoleht, Kenneth Care Home, Living Hope Home, Premier Elderly, and Tabuan Healthcare. If the person is mostly independent and the problem is a big house and quiet days, look at independent living instead. Two of the eight, Care Collective and Eden on the Park, say they offer it on the same site as their assisted living or nursing home. Use the websites to narrow the list, then visit before you decide.

What a nursing home in Kuching costs

A nursing home in Kuching typically costs RM1,500 to RM9,000 a month, depending on the room and how much nursing is needed, with extras such as diapers and physiotherapy billed on top.

Few Kuching providers publish a price, and those that do give a starting figure. These are the published Malaysian bands for 2026. Outside the Klang Valley, fees tend to sit at the lower end of each.

RM1,500 to 3,000: A shared room in a basic care centre. Meals, help with washing and dressing, and someone on site. Little or no nursing.
RM3,000 to 5,000: A shared or single room with nursing on site, medicines managed, and some physiotherapy.
RM5,000 to 9,000: A private room, higher-dependency nursing, dementia care, or senior living with care attached.
Add RM300 to 1,500: What almost every home bills on top: diapers, milk feeds, wound dressings, physiotherapy sessions, doctor call-outs, and transport.

Those extras are the gap between the quoted fee and the monthly bill. Ask for the monthly fee in writing, with a list of what it does not cover.

The three kinds of care

These names are used loosely, even by providers. Assisted living and nursing home overlap the most: both usually mean a residence where staff help with daily life and add clinical care as needs grow. Few places in Kuching offer only one or the other, so the name on the signboard tells you little. Retirement home usually means the first kind below, independent living. Ask what help is on site, who is there overnight, and what happens when needs go up.

What they say they provide: Nursing care, physiotherapy, stroke rehabilitation, day care, and nursing at home
Worth a look if: A family weighing a residential move against day care while they decide
Ask them about: Their website now forwards to Johnson Care Centre Sarawak, so ask first whether the home still runs under the Kenneth name, then who is on at night and how often rehabilitation happens.

Living Hope Home

What kind of place it is: A nursing and rehabilitation home on Jalan Bayan, with day care
What they say they provide: Round-the-clock nursing, care after hospital, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, stroke, dementia and palliative care, care for bedridden residents, hospital appointment escorts, and day care
Worth a look if: Someone leaving hospital after a stroke or an operation, or who is bedridden and needs nursing day and night
Ask them about: Whether a bed is free now, how many nurses are on overnight, and how many physiotherapy sessions a week the fee covers.

What kind of place it is: A 60-bed nursing centre in Tabuan with stay-in care, day care, and home nursing
What they say they provide: Round-the-clock stay-in care, day care from 7am to 7pm, respite and short stays, care after hospital, physiotherapy, and nursing visits at home
Worth a look if: Someone coming out of hospital, or a family who needs day care and residential care from the same team
Ask them about: Whether they are taking residents now, what stay-in care and day care each cost, and who is on at night.

The photographs show roughly what you are walking into. Several come from directories or archived sites, and some are years old, so judge the rooms in person. Living Hope Home has none here because the photos on its site show residents or come from stock libraries.
